Resilience
Resilience is defined as the ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficulties. Some people may call it “grit.” Resilience does not mean pretending everything is fine or that something isn’t difficult. It does not mean we have to figure things out all on our own, or “suffer quietly.”
Resilience includes skills we can learn and practice, tools we can put to use when times are tough. Resilience can also be fostered through Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs), such as feeling a sense of belonging, feeling supported by family or friends, and participating in community traditions. Resilience helps protect us from unhealthy behaviors, including substance misuse.
Mountain Strong offers group presentations about the power of resilience and how to put it to work for the wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities in far Western North Carolina.
