Alcohol
90% of WNC youth do not use alcohol (youth surveys, 2023). While most WNC youth do not misuse substances of any kind, alcohol is the most commonly used substance among those who do.
Still-developing brains in people under the age of 21 make them more vulnerable to problems that can occur with alcohol use, including injuries.
Starting alcohol use at a young age also increases the risk for developing a substance use disorder in adulthood. The risk increases as much as ____ times compared with the risk for those who wait until age 21 or older.
Our programs to prevent underage drinking include:
- Ad campaigns aimed at adult caregivers, including parents and guardians
- An ad campaign, currently in development, aimed at youth and highlighting peer non use as a the prevailing norm
- Responsible Alcohol Server Training
- Alcohol lock distribution for secure storage in the home
- “Talk It Out” presentations for groups of parents, educators, and others interested in supporting youth to make low-risk choices and avoid substance misuse
Parents and other caring adults can help prevent underage drinking and its consequences
- Monitor and securely store any alcohol in the home
- Stay involved and encourage your child to have a well-rounded life
- Talk with your child about rules and expectations
